The stylish regular-footer is considered to be the best surfer at Teahupoo. His backhand surfing technique is second to none. This photo was taken on the last big swell of 2005. The conditions were very inconsistent. The big sets came along every hour or so. The rest of the time the waves could be caught by paddling. Manoa and his teammate Malik Joyeux were fine-tuned after three massive swells during that same year. They stayed out from dawn to dusk hunting down all the big waves Teahupoo could throw at them. Malik was driving the jet ski and positioned Manoa perfectly for this ride of the day.
